Don't Make These 5 Design Mistakes!

Rooms inside your home are set up pretty simple — a dining room is for eating, a bedroom is for sleeping, and so on. When it comes to designing your outdoor space, things can get a bit more complicated.

1. Don’t ignore the rules of design! How you approach decorating your outdoor space is entirely up to you, but when it comes to designing, there are a few rules to follow.

  • First, establish a focal point — this will help guide people towards the right points of interest around the room.
  • Second, take advantage of vertical space. Use urns, raised planters, or even vases with tall grass or espaliered shrubs.
  • Lastly, take your home into consideration. The colors, patterns, and “feel” of the exterior of your home should be mimicked in your outdoor space as well.

2. Don’t forget that you’re outdoors. Some people can get very carried away when it comes to furnishing their outdoor space. Adding large sofas and coffee tables is not what your space is looking for. When decorating your outdoor space, try to be as minimalist as possible — in this case, less really is more.

3. Don’t forget to add plants! You may think that there’s enough green outside, but you should add more to the trees in your backyard. Plants can help soften the area, so try adding potted plants, patio trees, a dish garden, or even a vase of flowers.

4. Don’t just place your furniture anywhere. Think about the seating arrangement you have placed inside your home. We usually add tables and chairs in a certain way to help create a flow of conversation — and accessibility!

5. Don’t overload with different colors. Much of the outdoor furniture you’ll be seeing comes in white, tan, beige, or other neutral colors. This works in your favor because you can add a few decorative pillows or throws for a pop of color without ‘overdoing’ it.
