4 Tips To Get Your Carpet Ready For The Fall

Spring cleaning is popular, but tidying up your space during the Fall is just as important. This season is more than likely to bring in dirt, moisture, and debris from outside — and your floors will probably take the brunt of it. Here are four ways to get your carpet ready for the autumn season ahead!

Deep Clean
It’s time to prepare for the increase in filthy foot traffic, bad weather, and the plant debris that the fall season brings. So give your carpets a nice deep cleaning! Besides, your carpets should be getting professionally cleaned twice a year to help them look newer and last longer anyway.

Adjust Your Furniture
It’s wise to move your furniture around every once in awhile. Moving heavy furniture in a carpeted room helps prevent permanent marks in your floor and a new arrangement will also redirect foot traffic to prevent uneven wear-and-tear.

Use Doormats
There’s no such thing as too many doormats. One of the best ways to prevent excess dirt from entering your home is by having a doormat at every entryway. The outdoor mats should be tough for you to whip off your shoes, while the indoor mats should be a bit longer in length for any leftover dirt and debris to fall off.

Leave Your Shoes at the Door
All those doormats you just placed around your home — it’s a great place to take off your shoes as well! And leave an extra pair of indoor shoes by the mat for you to switch into!

How and When Should You Clean Your Bedspreads?

On average, we spend around a third of our lives on our bedding. That’s 56 hours a week of sweat, dead skin cells (and probably drool, too). So how often should we be washing away one of the most used items in our bedroom? And what’s the best way to do so?

Loading the washer
  • Sheets and bedspreads need lot of room to clean, so don't overload with too many items in one cycle.
  • Never wrap sheets around the agitator — they will tear and wrinkle.
  • Wash sheets separately to prevent other items from getting tangled or balled up.

Washer setting
  • Cotton sheets ro spreads are safe on any cycle, but check the label just in case!
  • Select the cycle that fits the soil level of the bedding — normal for light soil, heavy duty for stains and heavy soil.
*Be careful — overwashing sheets causes them to wear out faster.

Water Temperature
  • White and light-colored cotton wash well in any water temperature. When the cooler, flu season arrives, we suggest washing them on a hot/warm cycle to help reduce allergens.
  • Prevent dark-colors from fading by using cool water to wash and rinse.

How often should you wash? To keep dirt, dust, and other allergens at bay, you should clean your bedspreads at least once a week! Unless you spill something, you won't have to clean your comforter.

It’s hard to say goodbye to our seasonal properties — it's a place you dream of nine months out of the year. And your vacation home misses you too when you’re not there. The place can quickly get dusty, dirty, and in need of repair.

Before you hit the lights and lock away the key, follow this cleaning checklist to protect your home until next year.

  • Turn off all nonessential utilities.
  • Secure all windows and doors.
  • Turn on your alarm system.
  • Close your storm shutters.
  • Dispose of trash and perishable foods.
  • Adjust your furnace settings for the upcoming season.
  • Bring in your outdoor furniture (or store it with us!).
  • Unplug your appliances and electronics.
  • Request mail-forwarding services.

Consider a semi-annual deep clean for your vacation home as well. A deep clean includes:
