Houseplants That Clean Your Air

There is a list of risks when it comes to owning a home, but did you know that one of the biggest concerns comes from the air you breathe? According to the EPA, air quality within homes can be more polluted than the outdoor air. Indoor air pollutants range from pollen and dust to chemicals in our furniture and paint (VOCs).

One simple way to protect your home is by adding houseplants. But which ones get the job done? We recommend these five greens:

Garden Mum
This plant is an air-purifying champion, removing ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde, and xylene from your indoor air. And once they’re done blooming, you can remove them from your home and add them to your outdoor garden.

Spider Plant
Spider plants are best for removing formaldehyde and carbon monoxide from your home. Bonus: They’re a great choice for forgetful owners because they’re the easiest houseplants to grow. Just simply place them in a room with bright, indirect sunlight.

Red-Edged Dracaena
These red-edged plants can bring a pop of color to your home while also improving your indoor air quality. Primarily, these shrubs are best for removing xylene, trichlorethylene, and formaldehyde - all of which can be introduced into your home through lacquers, gasoline, and varnishes.

Peace Lily
Peace lily plants are relatively small, but they still pack major air-cleaning abilities, removing ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene. Place peace lilies in a shady spot, and keep the soil moist without overwatering.

Chrysanthemum
These full and colorful mums not only liven up a dull spot in your home but also help filter out benzene - an organic chemical compound found in glue, paint, plastics, and detergent.
