Get Rid Of Allergens In Your Home

Are you sneezing more than usual? Allergy season is upon us, which means being outdoors can get uncomfortable. But did you know we’re also exposed to allergen particles inside our homes? Research from the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology found at least six allergens in more than 50 percent of homes.

While it’s impossible to make your house completely allergen-free, there are a few ways to help you breathe easy.

Follow dusting ‘do’s and don'ts.’ Dust mites are the most common trigger of asthma and other allergy symptoms. However, dusting ends up kicking allergen particles into the air, making things worse.

Use a damp cloth and pat dust clean rather than scattering it. You can also lower the amount of dust buildup by minimizing the clutter in your home.

Switch to ‘green’ cleaning products. The harsh chemicals found in common household cleaners can aggravate your allergies and create poor indoor air quality.

If you’re sensitive to allergens, switch to ‘green,’ environmentally-friendly cleaning products. You can also make your own natural products using ingredients found in your home!

Control your indoor humidity levels. Allergen particles are more likely to stay in your air if there’s too little moisture, so you want the humidity in your home to be about 40 percent.

You can control the air conditions in your home with either a humidifier or a dehumidifier. And during the warmer months, remember to run your air conditioner to help control mold and dust mites.

Vacuum regularly. Vacuuming traps small allergen particles and prevents them from spreading into the air.

Make sure to vacuum at least once a week and call a professional to clean your carpets, as well as your furniture and upholstery.
