5 Things You Should Never Vacuum

Your vacuum is the most versatile tool in your cleaning toolbox. While your vacuum can clean up most messes, not everything should get a quick back-and-forth.

5 Things You Should Never Vacuum

  1. Large pieces of glass.
Big pieces of broken glass can puncture the bag, get lodged in the hose, or scratch up the inside of your vacuum. Use a broom instead!

  1. Fine dust.
Fine dust will clog filters or the vacuum bag right away, and then the machine might begin spewing the dust right back into the air. No thanks!

  1. Wet food (or anything moist).
Vacuum cleaners aren’t designed to pick up anything wet, whether it's soggy cereal, wet pet food, or even a spill. Paper towels get the job done best.

  1. Fireplace ashes.
These ashes trap heat (and are also fine particles) so don’t suck them up as you clean. Let the ashes cool — for four days to be exact — then use a wet/dry vacuum to clean the area.

  1. Coins, paper clips, or other small items.
These items typically get lost in our furniture or on the floor. It may be tempting, but don’t roll over them with your vacuum — they can break pieces inside.
