Creating a WOW Factor White Room

Think an all white room is too dull or stressful to maintain? White is one of those colors many homeowners shy away from when in fact it is the most welcoming color you can decorate with. And while this monochromatic look might seem simple, there are a few tips to help you achieve that “WOW” factor:

Start with a blank slate
Don’t be intimidated by an all-white room. Instead, look at is as a canvas - an opportunity for you to find what inspires you.

Use white in the kitchen
We can’t think of a more perfect way to let your modern or traditional style shine through with ultra white lacquer finished countertops and white wooden cabinets. Homeowners love this look because it’s both timeless and classic!

Create a combination
Ever notice how pairing contrasting colors such as white, black, gray, and brown look so luxurious? Whether it be the kitchen or living room, pair stainless steel or metallic finishes with brass, copper, and gold - these metallics pair great with the crispness of white.

Say “yes” to white upholstery
Thinking white upholstery is harder to keep clean? While this might be true, place white furniture in places where you’re likely to have less traffic. You can also consider a faux leather, faux suede, or slipcover material for pet and kid friendly spaces.

Warm things up
If your room is lacking personality or that “cozy” feel, consider layering whites in similar shades or warm whites, ivory, gray, and beige. Play with textures to add more depth to your space and throw on ceiling to floor cream colored window treatments to add more warmth and height.

For all of your white interiors, keep them clean with Triple S services. We are a family owned and operated carpet, upholstery, and drapery company with many more services available to homeowners and business owners. To learn more about how you can keep your whites Clean Fresh and Bright, visit us on the web.

We have three main plant locations:

Qualities of a Good Carpet Cleaning Company

Hiring a good carpet cleaning company goes beyond choosing the first five star rated service on the web. Ask yourself these questions before inviting them into your home:

Green Cleaning
Does the carpet cleaning company offer green cleaning and green products? One company might get the job done, but if they’re not using quality green-cleaning formulas and the most modern techniques and equipment, then you might benefit looking elsewhere.

Ask About Certificates
Ou want a carpet cleaner you can trust, so ask if they’ve been carefully screened and selected for their dedication and pride of performance. Have they also been trained by professionals? Know who you’re inviting into your home and go by your intuition - are these people I can trust?

One Stop Shop
Upon hiring a carpet cleaner, you might realize that you also need oriental and area rug cleaning or upholstery cleaning, etc. Choose a service that offers all of that and more, because let’s face it: even if you get your carpet cleaning one day, chances are you’ll want them to come back to make all your textiles look as spotless as your floor looks.

Spot Cleaning Products
Can the company you're hiring provide you with spot removal products and techniques to fix the little messes at home? Some carpet cleaning companies will use their professional tools and the job is done - the next time you need a cleanup, they’ll charge you for returning. There are other companies, however, who offer spot cleaners and careful instructions that allow you to clean like a pro all on your own!

The next time you need a professional carpet cleaning service, consider these tips.

At Triple S, we offer all of these services and then some! Visit us on the web or call any of our locations to learn more. We are a family owned business with over 50 years of experience and are here to help you keep your home looking and feeling Clean, Fresh, & Bright no matter how messy your furry friends might be!

Cleaning Tips Every Pet Owner Should Know

Having pets is no reason to get rid of your beautiful carpet! In fact, there are plenty of easy cleaning tips you can use when accidents occur. Here’s how you can keep your home clean and pet-friendly at the same time:

Vacuum it up. Pet hair can cling to many things in your home, especially carpets. If your furry friend sheds often, just grab a roll of masking tape and a vacuum cleaner. While lint rollers are a great solution, wrapping masking tape around an old paint roller can work even better, as it picks up larger accumulations of hair! Once you’re done collecting large clumps, make sure you vacuum. In fact, vacuuming up to at least three times a week can reduce the amount of hair that lingers in your carpet.

Blot stains. No matter how well you train your pet to use a pad or go outside, accidents are bound to happen. Cleaning up the urine stain immediately can give you optimal results and prevent stains from damaging your textile. First, stand on an old terry cloth towel to remove most of the moisture. Then, mix a few drops of liquid dishwashing detergent with one cup of water and work it into the stain. Keep in mind, blotting your carpet will work much more efficiently than rubbing it!

Use powders and liquids.
It’s inevitable that your pets will leave even a slight odor in your home, especially if they spend time playing outside. To keep your carpets and upholstery smelling their freshest, try using powdered odor eliminators when fabrics are dry, or even a liquid urine odor eliminator with ingredients like bio-enzymatic that kill bacteria.

Get a professional cleaning.
One of the best ways you can fight stains and odors that your loving pets leave behind is to get a professional cleaning. When you get a thorough cleaning, experts will come right to your door with all the proper equipment. They will remove soil and revive colors to leave fabric clean, fresh, & bright. Can’t beat that!

If you’re a pet owner looking for a certified carpet and upholstery cleaning technician to help you freshen up your carpets and upholstery, call the experts at Triple S! We are a family owned business with over 50 years of experience. We have three main plant locations:

Stamford Plant | 400 West Main Street
Norwalk Plant | 337 Westport Avenue
Stratford Plant | 1800 Stratford Avenue

Expert Tips for Allergy Cleaning

Sneezing more often? It’s that time of year again! Allergy season is upon us, which means being outdoors can get uncomfortable. It also means that pollen can easily creep inside our homes. The good news is that a little cleaning in each room can solve the problem. Here are a few expert cleaning tips you can start using now:

Bedroom. A third of our lives are spent in the bedroom, so it’s important to start there. Pollen, dust mites, and pet dander easily catch onto bedsheets, so make sure you wash them weekly. As for comforters - clean them at least once a month. Allergens collect on your flooring too, so mop hardwood floors weekly and regularly clean your carpets for a good night’s rest!

Bathroom.
Warmth and moisture combined create a moldy environment. While a hot shower may feel refreshing, it causes mildew to grow unless we clean frequently. Clean shower stalls and bathtubs weekly, and don’t forget the shower curtains too! Scrubbing away soap scum is the number one way to keep mold and allergens away.

Kitchen.
Prevent allergens in the kitchen by making it a habit to clean a little bit each day, especially if you cook often! For starters, clean food and grease from your stove after each use and soak up spills immediately. Did you know insects can attract allergens? To avoid them, remove the trash daily and clean in and around the fridge. Last but not least, wash your floors weekly.

Living Area.
Between carpets, drapery, and furniture, there’s plenty of surfaces to vacuum. When you find that vacuum bags are about half way full, throw them away and replace with a new one. We recommend HEPA filtered vacuums or central vacuum systems that exhaust outside.

Believe it or not, a room with carpets and draperies has better air quality than hard surfaces because textiles act as a sink and hold contaminates until removed by cleaning. However, it’s important to always keep them fresh! Call the cleaning specialists at Triple S! We have three main plant locations:

Stamford Plant | 400 West Main Street
Norwalk Plant | 337 Westport Avenue
Stratford Plant | 1800 Stratford Avenue

What is an Abrash Rug?

Looking for a new rug that is sure to make your home a one-of-a-kind? Leave it to a hand-knotted rug to spruce up your favorite living space. When you walk into a store, ask for an Abrash rug - an oriental rug color with a truly authentic design.

Here’s why an Abrash rug is a unique choice:

It has different color variations. The term Abrash, from the Arabic word for mottled, is used to indicate color changes that run horizontally across the rug. So a light shade of blue may have hints of darker blue, but these hues will never be the same as another rug.

It has a unique dyeing process. Abrash results from variations of the dyeing process. it’s never a perfect match, which makes each one stands out. Because the weaver runs out of one batch and restarts with another, it results in different shades. How cool is that!

It cleans up well. The true colors of Abrash are easily obstructed by soil, causing it to lose its vibrancy. Luckily, Abrash reacts well to a professional cleaning, bringing back the rich hues. Unlike other rugs, an Abrash rug will look new for years to come!

What do you think of the Abrash oriental rug color? Tell us what you think on our Facebook page!

Need a deep clean for your oriental rug? Call the textile specialists at Triple S! We have three main plant locations:

Factors Affecting Your New Rug Purchase

Finding the perfect rug to decorate your new space can be tricky. From having kids and pets to choosing the right design, there are many factors to consider. Not sure where to start? Don’t worry - we’ve compiled four factors that may influence your new rug purchase, as well as tips to help you make the best choice:

Budget. Make sure to buy the best rug you can afford. Saving up and spending just a little more money on a higher quality area rug, such as wool, can be worth it in the long run! The price range for a new rug is large, so it’s important to go into a store knowing how much you’re willing to spend.

Color & Pattern. A helpful tip is to choose your rug before buying furniture and painting. But what if the room is already furnished? If you find yourself in this scenario, consider balancing color and pattern within the space. Be sure to purchase a rug you will love for years to come.

Material. Select a rug that fits your lifestyle. Will your rug be placed in a high-traffic area? Do you have a dog that sheds often? Go with a durable, easy-to-clean area rug if either of these are the case. Bonus tip: Remember that dark colors and patterns do a good job of camouflaging dirt and stains.

Size. Your new rug purchase should fit the size of your current seating area. Leaving 6-10” extra on either side of the couch will help you prevent it from looking awkward and small. For the dining room, buy a rug that is large enough to fit your chairs when they’re pulled back.

Have you already found the perfect rug and need a deep cleaning? Triple S Carpet & Drapery Cleaners has three main plant locations:

Stamford Plant | 400 West Main Street
Norwalk Plant | 337 Westport Avenue

Evolution of Carpet Cleaning & Repair

From area rugs to wall to wall carpet and back again, find out how carpet cleaning and repair has changed over the years:

Early 1950s- Area rugs were in popular demand and the wealthy would swap those rugs out seasonally. As such, cleaning facilities had to be large enough to store these rugs regardless of the season.

Late 1950s - Wall-to-wall became popular as area rugs started fading out, but since portable equipment for cleaning rugs wasn’t developed yet - cleaners had to rip up carpet and bring it in for cleaning. The downside? This created problems with shrinkage when trying to reinstall the carpet. The solution? Equipment was developed to clean wall-to-wall in place.

1970s - Carpet fibers made a change for the better. Olefin, a synthetic fiber, replaced nylon. Then polyester came into the picture, which could be dyed in various colors. Carpet fiber makers began to warranty the product instead of the carpet mills.

1980s
- With mold becoming a major health concern, it lead popularity back to hardwood floors. Consequently, area rugs became common in homes again.

Expert Tips for Preventing Permanent Fabric Stains

Afraid of spills and accidents? While your answer may be yes, that’s no reason to avoid that beige carpet you always wanted.

Oils often adhere tenaciously to fibers, building up and becoming a physical part of the fabric - but DON’T PANIC! By taking immediate action, this can be easily avoided. See below for our expert tips on spills and spot removal:
1. Blot up spills. Using a clean white absorbent material, immediately soak up the spill.

2. Pre-test spot removal formulas. Before using a new formula, test a small amount on a not-so-noticeable area of the fabric. Put a few drops of formula on each color in the fabric and examine the results. If dye has bled into the absorbent material and cause a color change, call a professional ASCR member cleaner for advice.

3. Do not over-wet. Problems can arise from using large amounts of formulas. Work with small amounts of formulas and blot frequently. Avoid rubbing or brushing the fabric.

4. Work from the outer edge toward the center of the stain. For best results, follow this essential rule.

5. Have patience. Some stains respond slowly.

How to Remove Fresh Pet Urine Stains on Your Carpet

You love your cats and dogs but you're probably not fond of the urine stains they accidentally leave behind on your carpet. The good news is that if you catch the urine stain while it's still fresh, not dried into the carpet, you can follow these few steps to clean it right up.

The most important thing is that you dilute the urine and get it out of the carpet.

  1. Use water to blot the spot with a white absorbent material. Your best bet would be a cotton towel. Continue to wet the towel with more water and blot until no more urine is being removed.
  2. Only at this point can you now use your store bought bacteria-enzyme pet urine remover to clean out the remaining urine or odor.
  3. If you don't have a pet urine remover, use the following as a back up:
    1. Clean the area with a diluted neutral detergent.
    2. Take a tablespoon of household ammonia to a 1/2 cup of water and blot until no more urine is removed.
    3. Neutralize with 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts of water and blot the area.
  4. Blot up any remaining moisture by pressing or padding the area with the absorbent white towel and weight it down. Allow to dry for 6 hours.

Important Notes:
  • Always test your spotting solution in an inconspicuous area.
  • Urine stains may cause permanent dye removal from fibers.
  • Urine could have penetrated the carpet and may have contaminated your under padding. Cutting and replacing this section of pad is best.
  • If you need help, you can find a IICRC certified carpet cleaner in your area by going to www.iicrc.org.

#WellnessWednesday Tips for a Healthier Home

If not already underway, spring cleaning routines and maintenance needs are definitely being considered. Are you looking for ways to not only make your home a cleaner one, but a healthier one too?

Triple S, Healthier Homes

We have a few tips that might help:

Wipe down countertops regularly. Countertops harbor a great deal of dirt, dust and bacteria, making them a good place to start. A mild cleaner that can refresh the sealer is best to use.

Vacuum carpets weekly. Since allergens and bacteria get trapped in the fibers, your rugs and carpets can be a major source of health issues and allergies. Vacuuming will help to improve the air quality in your home but a professional should also be contacted for deeper cleanings.

Vacuum upholstered furniture. Just as easy and as important as carpeting, high-traffic furniture should be vacuumed once a week, as well, and cleaned by a professional annually.

Sanitize "high touch" parts of your home. To minimize the spread of germs, use anti-bacterial wipes on surfaces that are touched frequently - including door knobs, toilet handles, faucets and light switches.

Have a door mat or runner at your entryway. Contrary to the popular belief that wood floors make for a healthier home, door mats are actually the perfect way to keep outside germs and allergens at the entryway instead of dragging them through the house.

Deep Clean Your Carpet Naturally

The first official day of spring is this Friday, which means homeowners everywhere will be going on a cleaning spree this weekend! How will you tackle your home's carpets?

Triple S, Carpet Cleaning

This year, consider deep cleaning them the natural way. If you're not ready to call a professional, such as Triple S, you can still freshen them up until your next appointment with these few tips:

1. Start with a thorough vacuum. While you probably, and should, vacuum routinely, take advantage of spring cleaning by really getting into those nooks and crannies. If you move other furnishings or decor for their own cleaning, vacuum in in those spots while they're removed.

2. Check for sneaky stains. If your pet urinates on the carpet or you spill a glass of wine, you'll know you have to spot clean it. But what about those hidden stains from your kids sticky fingers or the last lick of their ice cream pop that you didn't know about? Again, while furniture is moved and your doing a little redecorating, keep your eyes open for hidden stains. Try this DIY Stain Remover to tackle them.

3. Create your own carpet freshener. Combine 1 cup of baking soda, 10 to 20 drops of your favorite essential oil, and maybe 1/2 cup of borax to keep pet fleas at bay. Sprinkle this mix onto your carpet and let it sit for just 10-15 minutes before your next vacuum. This makes for a prolonged freshness!

Have some area rugs or tapestries that you'd rather not tag onto the end of your spring cleaning list. Bring them to us or we'll come pick them up! Triple S has three main plant locations:

Stamford Plant | 400 West Main Street
Norwalk Plant | 337 Westport Avenue
Stratford Plant | 1800 Stratford Avenue

Spring Cleaning Chores for the Pros

The first official day of spring is just two short weeks away and we know that means everyone is beginning to think-up and draft a list of their must do spring cleaning chores.

Whether you use cleaning as your therapy or are just hoping to quickly check it all off, there are a few main chores you shouldn't be doing because you're better off calling in a professional to do so.

Washing Windows. Without the help of a professional, washing windows quickly turns into a multi-day project. For just one bundled cost, a professional window washer will typically clean the inside and outside of the windows, the screens, the sills and maybe even protect nearby floors and furnishings at no extra cost.

Restoring Hardwood Floors. Professional cleaning can give your hardwood floors a clean deeper and fresher than you, as a homeowner, can achieve with a mop. A commercial-strength clean and polish can typically be applied to up to 500 square feet of your flooring in under an hour.

Carpet Cleaning. That's where we come in! In-home carpet cleaning is not all that easy to do, making it a good spring cleaning task to hand over to a professional. At Triple S, our machinery and cleaners can tackle dirt and build-up throughout the entire depth of carpet fibers - not just on the surface. Completing these services at least once or twice a year extends the lifetime of your rugs and carpets and improves the overall indoor air quality of your home.

Once carpet cleaning becomes the next item on your spring cleaning chore list, give the textile specialists at Triple S a call. We have three main plant locations:

Stamford Plant | 400 West Main Street
Norwalk Plant | 337 Westport Avenue
Stratford Plant | 1800 Stratford Avenue

How to Maintain a Brand New Carpet

A new carpet installation is many things. An exciting and fresh look in your home, for one. To maintain this carpet through various seasons, years, holiday parties and other activities, you'll want to establish a plan of action for your carpet care.

Here's a basic guideline.

Know what kind of action you'll want to take before spills and similar accidents occur. Spot cleaning techniques are effective if performed in a timely manner. Therefore, educating yourself at the time of installation is ideal so you don't have to worry about doing your research when an accident has already happened. Spot removal tips can be found on our website »

Vacuum regularly. For many homeowners, regularly means about once or twice or week. The truth, however, is that you should really vacuum daily. Find a few reasons why in a previous blog post.

You'll want to have your carpets professionally cleaned every year to every year and a half. While regular home maintenance is effective and should be done, you can only achieve a deep clean with professional equipment. Learn more about our on-site services here »

Remember, always treat stains as soon as they occur for a longer-lasting and beautiful carpet!
