Your Allergy Survival Guide

With allergy season in full swing, chances are if you’re allergy-sufferer, you’ve been scratching and sneezing more than usual. But that doesn’t have to be the case - we’ve put together an allergy survival guide to get you through the tough spring season:

1. Stay hydrated
A surefire way to keep allergens at bay is to drink plenty of fluids. And by that, we mean water to boost your electrolytes. When you become dehydrated, you become more at risk for making your allergy symptoms worse, which can become a vicious cycle if you don’t refill your glass often.

2. Vitamin supplements
Researchers have found that vitamins and minerals are linked to decreased allergy symptoms. Vitamin D and Omega 3 are both ideal supplements that have proven to stop the itchy nose and eyes once incorporated into a healthy, well-balanced diet.

3. Swiffer hardwood every day
On hardwood, it gets easy for dust to get blown around. And when dust becomes airborne, allergies can worsen. So reply on your handy Swiffer to mop your hardwood and tile floors daily - all it takes is a few minutes and a few sweeps!

4. Vacuum textiles weeks
It’s also important to take proper care of your textiles, such as your furniture and carpeting. Although having carpet is better for allergy-sufferers (due to the absorbency of dust and other allergens), it’s still beneficial to make sure you remove dust often, especially if you leave the windows open or invite guests over often.

Keep allergies down this season by making it a healthy habit to clean often and keep up with a healthy diet. You will also benefit from taking advantage of our professional cleaning services. At Triple S, we offer carpet, upholstery, tile cleaning, and more. We are a family owned business with over 50 years of experience and are here to help you keep your home looking and feeling Clean, Fresh, & Bright!

Green Cleaning the Bathroom

Cleaning up your bathroom for spring? Put the bleach aside!

Nowadays people are finding new and eco-friendly ways to clean up their home, and for a good reason! Harsh chemicals cause environmental damage and are hazardous to your health. So why not try these green cleaning tips instead?

Little by little
If given extra time in the morning (or at night), make it a daily habit to clean up after every shower. Overtime, that icky black mildew can grow and grow. So wipe up the surface with a non-bleach cleaner. And if you can, reuse your towel twice before tossing in the laundry.

Natural scents
Don’t let your bathroom stink up! To keep it smelling fresh, squeeze several drops of essential oil, such as eucalyptus or peppermint into a small vessel and let it sit on your countertop. In the guest bath, leave a few options for your visitors to enjoy!

Showerhead cleanse
Showerheads can become clogged with mineral deposits, so skip the harsh chemicals and fill a plastic bag with undiluted white vinegar. Then, tie the plastic bag over the showerhead and let it work its magic overnight. Lastly, scrub the surface clean with a toothbrush - should be good as new!

Airing it out
While the best way to prevent mildew is to turn on the exhaust fan, another eco-friendly and energy efficient option is to crack open the window when showering. This will allow the steam to escape before you fog the windows up!

Tips for Cleaning Every Room at Home

Spring Cleaning season is here! From organizing the closet to scrubbing down tile, getting every inch of your home clean will make you feel refreshed and reenergized. Before you get started, make yourself a checklist like this one:

Kitchen
  • Clean around and inside appliances using an all-natural cleaner
  • Empty out the fridge and get rid of expired or rotten food
  • Get rid of pet hair and dust from behind the refrigerator and off your tile floors
  • Scrub down your backsplash and wipe up any tomato sauce or gravy stains
Bathroom
  • Clean your countertops
  • Empty cabinets and remove any expired medications or shampoos you no longer use
  • Scrub your tile floors and grout
  • Place incense in the bathroom for a fresh, clean aroma
  • Throw out old makeup, gels, and hairsprays
Bedroom
  • Go through your closet and create piles (one for garbage, another for donations, the next for winter storage, and the last for keeps)
  • Vacuum your carpet in those hard-to-reach spots like behind the bed
  • Swap out your warm, flannel sheets for finer linens instead
Living Room
  • Wash your window treatments
  • Toss your throws and pillow covers in the laundry
  • Clean your carpets

At Triple S, we can help you narrow down this list so you have more time enjoying the beautiful spring weather! Spring Cleaning Shortcuts

Let’s face it: cleaning is one of the least fun chores we can imagine. Not to mention, it can also be incredibly time consuming. But when the winter is over, your home needs a little freshening up. To get rid of dirt, scuff marks, and stains, try these cleaning shortcuts to make your task an easier one:

Create easy access - Keeping your cleaning supplies within reach will give you more incentive to clean, rather than having to them down. So get creative by making a special space for them, such as hanging a rod underneath the kitchen sink or assembling a separate cabinet for them.

Work from top to bottom - This one is such a time saver, we can’t stress it enough! A mistake people often make is cleaning the floors, and then tidying up the final touches, such as their cabinets and faucets. Try cleaning backwards! Countertops, cabinets, and appliances should be the first thing. Next should be the floors, because let’s face it, after cleaning the top half, your floors will be a lot more messy.

Make the most of time - Cut down on cleaning time by working efficiently and not wasting a minute. For example, after spraying a cleaner on your bathroom fixtures, take out the trash. When you come back inside, your fixtures should be ready for a good scrubbing (and most of the stains should be dissolved).

Hire a pro - If you despise cleaning, don’t have the time, or lack proper equipment, you’re best off hiring a professional to take care of the cleaning for you. You have at least two crucial times when cleaning your house is necessary: the holidays and spring.

With spring upon us, call the textile experts at Triple S to make the process of cleaning a breeze! We serve Fairfield County, Greenwich, Cos Cob and the surrounding regions of Connecticut!  Triple S is a family owned business with over 50 years of experience.

Stop! Keep Dirt at the Door

April showers will be here soon, which means you'll be kicking up more dirt in your tracks. Fortunately, you can stop the dirt from ruining your beautiful floors by following these steps:

Choose a good mat. Welcome mats come in all shapes, sizes, and textures. You’ll want to choose one dependent on the amount of foot traffic your enterence receives. For example, if you (and guests) use the front entrance more often than the back entrance, you will keep floors cleaner by purchasing a heavy-duty mat for both inside and outside. For your outdoor mat, choose coir matting or vinyl-backed synthetic turf. For the inside mat, go with nylon or olefin with rubber backing.

Wash your mats. It seems like an obvious step, but many homeowners often overlook this important task. Mats get dirty extremely easily, so hose them down and scrub them with dishwashing liquid and warm water. Let them air dry and make sure they are completely dry before putting them back to prevent your floors from warping.

Create a shoeless zone. Make your home a shoeless zone for everyone. Encourage your family and friends to take off their shoes before entering your home or to wipe thoroughly on both the outdoor and indoor mats. People will respect that you want a clean home and spotless floors - just make it easy for them to oblige (a shoe rack or basket is a good idea).

Don’t forget about paws. People aren’t the only one’s with dirty soles! Before your pet returns from being outside (especially in the rain), wipe their paws and dry off their fur. You’ll be keeping your floors clean, but also keeping your furry friend cozy!

Will you think twice before walking into your home with muddy shoes? We know we will!

At Triple S, we know how important it is to keep your floors clean, fresh, and bright! We offer professional cleaning services for all of your textiles and more. Triple S is a family owned business with over 50 years of experience and are here to help you keep your home looking and feeling Clean, Fresh, & Bright!

The Best Time to Clean Window Treatments

Draperies and window treatments not looking as fresh as they used to? Soil, dust, and weather conditions are just a few reasons why it’s time for a spring cleaning. To keep your home looking and feeling new, look no further than our expert tips on when to clean these fabrics:

Be wary of dust and contaminants - They cling to your window treatments and continually flow upwards behind them - like air into a chimney.

Give it the smell test - Put your face in the fabric. If you smell odors and dust, it’s time to clean.

Check the calendar - Are you due for an annual cleaning? While you can clean your draperies any time, spring is best as summer humidity bonds the soil to fabric. Sunlight and moisture can drastically change the freshness of your window treatments.

So how can you clean them? Best is to vacuum thoroughly at least once a year (especially in spring). Bonus tip: be sure to reduce the vacuum suction as not to damage the fabric.

Need a professional cleaning? Call the specialists at Triple S! Professional cleaning methods include dry cleaning, wet cleaning, and washing. Draperies are then pressed, sized, and returned to you with new pins, exact length and perfect hemlines.

#WellnessWednesday Tips for a Healthier Home

If not already underway, spring cleaning routines and maintenance needs are definitely being considered. Are you looking for ways to not only make your home a cleaner one, but a healthier one too?

Triple S, Healthier Homes

We have a few tips that might help:

Wipe down countertops regularly. Countertops harbor a great deal of dirt, dust and bacteria, making them a good place to start. A mild cleaner that can refresh the sealer is best to use.

Vacuum carpets weekly. Since allergens and bacteria get trapped in the fibers, your rugs and carpets can be a major source of health issues and allergies. Vacuuming will help to improve the air quality in your home but a professional should also be contacted for deeper cleanings.

Vacuum upholstered furniture. Just as easy and as important as carpeting, high-traffic furniture should be vacuumed once a week, as well, and cleaned by a professional annually.

Sanitize "high touch" parts of your home. To minimize the spread of germs, use anti-bacterial wipes on surfaces that are touched frequently - including door knobs, toilet handles, faucets and light switches.

Have a door mat or runner at your entryway. Contrary to the popular belief that wood floors make for a healthier home, door mats are actually the perfect way to keep outside germs and allergens at the entryway instead of dragging them through the house.

Deep Clean Your Carpet Naturally

The first official day of spring is this Friday, which means homeowners everywhere will be going on a cleaning spree this weekend! How will you tackle your home's carpets?

Triple S, Carpet Cleaning

This year, consider deep cleaning them the natural way. If you're not ready to call a professional, such as Triple S, you can still freshen them up until your next appointment with these few tips:

1. Start with a thorough vacuum. While you probably, and should, vacuum routinely, take advantage of spring cleaning by really getting into those nooks and crannies. If you move other furnishings or decor for their own cleaning, vacuum in in those spots while they're removed.

2. Check for sneaky stains. If your pet urinates on the carpet or you spill a glass of wine, you'll know you have to spot clean it. But what about those hidden stains from your kids sticky fingers or the last lick of their ice cream pop that you didn't know about? Again, while furniture is moved and your doing a little redecorating, keep your eyes open for hidden stains. Try this DIY Stain Remover to tackle them.

3. Create your own carpet freshener. Combine 1 cup of baking soda, 10 to 20 drops of your favorite essential oil, and maybe 1/2 cup of borax to keep pet fleas at bay. Sprinkle this mix onto your carpet and let it sit for just 10-15 minutes before your next vacuum. This makes for a prolonged freshness!

Have some area rugs or tapestries that you'd rather not tag onto the end of your spring cleaning list. Bring them to us or we'll come pick them up! Triple S has three main plant locations:

Stamford Plant | 400 West Main Street
Norwalk Plant | 337 Westport Avenue
Stratford Plant | 1800 Stratford Avenue

Spring Cleaning Chores for the Pros

The first official day of spring is just two short weeks away and we know that means everyone is beginning to think-up and draft a list of their must do spring cleaning chores.

Whether you use cleaning as your therapy or are just hoping to quickly check it all off, there are a few main chores you shouldn't be doing because you're better off calling in a professional to do so.

Washing Windows. Without the help of a professional, washing windows quickly turns into a multi-day project. For just one bundled cost, a professional window washer will typically clean the inside and outside of the windows, the screens, the sills and maybe even protect nearby floors and furnishings at no extra cost.

Restoring Hardwood Floors. Professional cleaning can give your hardwood floors a clean deeper and fresher than you, as a homeowner, can achieve with a mop. A commercial-strength clean and polish can typically be applied to up to 500 square feet of your flooring in under an hour.

Carpet Cleaning. That's where we come in! In-home carpet cleaning is not all that easy to do, making it a good spring cleaning task to hand over to a professional. At Triple S, our machinery and cleaners can tackle dirt and build-up throughout the entire depth of carpet fibers - not just on the surface. Completing these services at least once or twice a year extends the lifetime of your rugs and carpets and improves the overall indoor air quality of your home.

Once carpet cleaning becomes the next item on your spring cleaning chore list, give the textile specialists at Triple S a call. We have three main plant locations:

Stamford Plant | 400 West Main Street
Norwalk Plant | 337 Westport Avenue
Stratford Plant | 1800 Stratford Avenue
