Area Rug Do's and Dont's

Want to enhance your living area’s design? Choosing the right area rug can make all the difference! But from material to color and even texture, there are plenty of area rugs to choose from. So how do you scope out the perfect selection? Before you start shopping for one, here are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind:

DO choose right size
You don’t want a rug that’s too small nor too large. Think of your furniture as a rule of measurement when shopping for your rug. For example, size up the area rug properly to your furniture by selecting a rug that fits just under the front legs of the sofa. However, there are many other ways to style your rug. Click here to learn about other options.

DO choose furniture before rugs
Not only will choosing your furniture first help you find the right fit, but it will also act as a canvas for the rest of your space, and that includes your rug. You want your textiles to compliment your furniture, so pick the area rug last. Plus, it gives you the opportunity to switch up the rug seasonally if you prefer.

DON'T break the bank
A beautiful rug doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg. Set a budget for yourself and stick to it- the less money you spend on a rug, the more cash you have to spend on a possible secondary rug or other home decor items that will tie the room together.

DON'T shy away from creativity
When it comes to decorating, don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns. For instance, choose a geometric print rug and an animal print arm chair. Keep the colors complimentary, but that doesn’t mean you need to stay too close inside the lines.

Do you have an area rug at home that you love but needs a little cleaning up? Call the textile experts at Triple S! We are your source for top notch professional cleaning services. We are a family owned business with over 50 years of experience, ready to help you get rid dirt as well as accidental stains.

Prep Your Home for a Holiday Party

The lyrics from that classic holiday song: "There’s no place like home for the holidays" - they couldn’t be any more true! If you’re staying home for the holiday season and preparing for an upcoming holiday party, make your guests feel extra welcome by keeping these cleaning and organizing tips in mind:

Make it sparkle.
Make your home sparkle from top to bottom! This means wipe down your countertops and floors (and vacuum your rugs). Rule of thumb is to give yourself about 10 minutes per room. But even if you do a quick run through, you will notice that your home will look more ready for your gathering. Just be careful not to test any new cleaning chemicals if you're prepping last minute, or at least test these chemicals in one small spot first to avoid doing more harm than good.

Get rid of clutter.
From piles of mail in the kitchen or beauty products in the bathroom, put all of these items away. The less clutter you have sitting out, the more room you’ll create for guests, cooking, and your holiday feast!

Check the lights.
Not just your holiday lights! Check the bulbs at your front porch and side table lamps to make sure your house doesn’t go dark during your gathering! Even if a bulb doesn’t look dim, it helps to change it anyway - especially if you know it’s been awhile since you changed it last.

Set up a welcome mat.
With the number of guests you’ll be expecting, make sure you have a place for them to kick off their shoes. This will keep dirt out of the house so you have less of a mess to clean up later on. Also, be sure there are plenty of coat hangers as well as extra space for their bags and other belongings.

At Triple S, our expert carpet and upholstery cleaners are ready to help you with any last minute cleaning you may need in the home! Visit our website for more information about our services. We have three main plant locations:

How to Get Ready for Holiday Guests

Friends and relatives visiting for the holidays? Make them feel right at home by preparing your home ahead of time. Below is a checklist to get every room ready in the house, from the guest bedroom to the bathroom:

Provide extra linens.
Make sure your guests have everything they need, including extra bath and hand towels. It also helps to collect toiletries and place them in easy-to-find spots so they don’t need to come to you every time they need a favor.

Clear out the closets.
Provide your holiday guests with additional closet space - just enough for them to unpack their belongings. Go the extra mile by clearing out a few shelves so they can fold their clothes and place shoes in an organized fashion - they’ll be so grateful you did.

Offer magazines and books.
Whether it’s jet lag or homesickness, sometimes your guests might have trouble sleeping. Place a few books, magazines, newspapers, and even local maps on their nightstand so they can do some light reading to help put their mind and body at ease.

Write down emergency information.
There may be times when you’re not home and your friends or relatives need essential details about the house and neighborhood. Jot down a list of necessary phone numbers. security codes, and other relevant household information so that they can make themselves feel at home without you needing to be there.

Dust the floors.
Don’t let your guests suffer from breathing in too much dirt and dust. Vacuum your carpets and drapery, and wipe down your tiles too! You want your home to be spotless upon your guests’ arrival and want them to feel 100 percent comfortable. So clean your house the way you would want your loved ones to do the same for you.

If you need help with some last minute cleaning for your carpets, upholstery, and tiles, call the experts and Triple S! We are a family owned business with over 50 years of experience and are ready to help you get your home ready for the holidays! Triple S has three main plant locations:

2016 Top Flooring Trends

Thinking about remodeling your home for the New Year? If so, be sure to add flooring to your checklist! When you dig up that old carpet, you might realize that your floors need some major updating.

First impressions are lasting impressions, so choosing the right floor is crucial! Check out some of the latest, most beautiful top flooring trends that are in high demand for 2016:

Wide Planks. You can expect to see a growing number of homes with long, wide planks in the home. With the latest technology and engineering, this flooring product provides more stability that will last for many years.

Light Wood. For a while, traditional dark wood flooring was a popular trend, but now that the economy is starting to improve, lighter tones are in higher demand. For example, driftwood is a trending choice, especially for beach-front inspired homes.

Gray. Currently, gray flooring is taking over the market as opposed to dark wood. This especially works well in a home that has a minimal look or modern Scandinavian style. There are plenty of flooring options available in gray, such as laminate and vinyl.

Reclaimed. Many homeowners are jumping on the Green bandwagon by going all natural in the home. But not only is reclaimed wood eco-friendly - it’s also one of the top flooring trends for 2016. Why? Because using old, reclaimed wood adds characters and tells a history of where the wood originally came from.

If finding a new flooring solution is your goal before the New Year, then consider these four popular options. When you find the perfect new floor for your home, be sure to keep it clean! At Triple S, we offer you the skills and experience to take care of any and all of your floors. To learn more about our services, give us a call at 203-847-8000 or visit our website.

It’s all happened to us at some point or another. We spill a cup of coffee on our favorite shirt or drop a bottle of nail polish on the rug. Whatever the mess may be, there’s almost always a way to clean it up. As your Norwalk professional carpet and upholstery cleaning company, we’d like to provide you with a few expert tips to get rid of every type of stain you can think of.

5 Step Stain Removal

Step 1. Apply a small amount of dry cleaning solvent or alcohol. You can buy this at your local grocery or drug store. Be sure to use small amounts to prevent any possible damage to sizing, backings, or stuffing materials.

Step 2. Mix one teaspoonful of white neutral detergent with a cup of lukewarm water.

Step 3. Mix one tablespoon of household ammonia with a half cup of water.

Step 4. Mix one-third cup of white household vinegar with two-thirds cup of water.

Step 5. Mix a solution of powdered enzyme laundry detergent following label or box directions. Allow the solution to remain on the stain for the length of time recommended by the manufacturer.

Common Stain Removal Tips

Chocolate - Follow steps 2, 3, 4, & 5

Carpet or Hardwood: Which Do You Prefer?

If you’re on the fence between installing new wood floors or new carpeting in your home, there are plenty of factors to take into consideration. Like any other home decor element, hardwood and carpet both have their pros and cons. That being said, below are a few things to consider before making your decision:

Carpet

Comfy - There’s almost no better feeling than coming home, kicking your shoes off, and feeling soft, plush fabric beneath your feet. So if ultimate comfort is what you’re looking for, then carpet might be the right choice for you.

Soundproof - Another perk of installing carpet in your home is that it is on the quiet side. This is especially important if you have a multi-level house. That way, you won’t hear the loud sound coming from the floor above or disturb anyone in the home. And the more plush the carpeting, the more soundproof it will most likely be.

Safety for children - Do you have a growing family? If so, you might want to consider installing carpet instead of wood. Why? Well, essentially carpet provides cushion to protect feet, arms, and legs from being injured as they might on hardwood. This is especially crucial to consider if you have infants at home, as they will be more protected while learning to walk.

Hardwood

Hypoallergenic - The greatest benefit of hardwood flooring is that is doesn’t carry around much dust and allergens. However, like any other part of your home, it must be regularly cleaned and maintained to provide your home with the best hypoallergenic quality.

Low maintenance - Hardwood can generally be more low maintenance than carpet. What we mean by that is that it can be easier to grab dirt and crumbs off wood using a damp cloth or the proper vacuum tools.

Eco-friendly - Another perk of hardwood is that there are plenty of eco-friendly options from which to choose, such as bamboo and cork. Ask your local flooring company about recycled or reclaimed sources that can help you install beautiful floors while helping the environment.

5 Simple Ways to Liven Up Your Living Room

Tired of spending time in a dull living room? If you’re looking to freshen up your space (especially with the holidays approaching), we’ve got your tips here! Redecorating doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. Here are simple and affordable ways you can turn your living room into an oasis:

Accent Colors. If your walls and carpet are white, why not spice things up by adding accent colors? Whether it be pillows, wall decor, or an accent chair, splashes of color are a sure way to raise your spirits (and your guests’ too)!

Open Space. Sometimes your furniture isn’t set up in the best layout. In fact, finding a layout that opens up the space more is another way you can liven up your living room. Why? Because when you have more space, you have more room to breathe and move around.

Earthy Textures. Bring the outdoors inside by adding a jute area rug or an armchair with wooden legs. Both of these options can bring an earthy vibe to your home, making the space more lively and boost your mood.

Natural Light.
While heavy drapery can create a cozy feel during the winter months, it also blocks out natural sunlight. And the more natural light you let into your home, the more happy and healthy you will feel.

Clean it up. Oftentimes, clutter can make you feel cramped in your home. Especially if your living area is the place where you entertain the most, be sure to keep it clean. That means, get rid of clutter and vacuum up dirt and allergens often.

Need a deep cleaning to help liven up your living room? We can help you with that! At Triple S, we offer several cleaning services to keep you home looking and feeling its freshest! To learn more, give us a call at 203-847-8000 or visit our website.

Decorating for the Holidays

You know that classic song: “There’s No Place Like Home For The Holidays” - especially when you decorate! You don’t have to celebrate Christmas to make your home feel festive. Below are five versatile ways to spruce up your living space for the season:

Decorate the door - Whether you hang up a sign or a holiday wreath, there are plenty of ways to show you're in the holiday spirit. Tip: When you choose neutral, metallic, or bronze colors, you can keep that decoration up way past the holidays!

Customize it - Show your holiday colors by adding some unique decorations, such as a Christmas tree or a Menorah. Customizing your space with these festive symbols is a sure way to get you in the spirit this month and carry on traditions!

Switch up bedding & pillows - Want a simple way to transform your home for the holidays? Swap out your summer and fall accessories for different colors, like red, orange, or even metallic. The warmer the colors, the more you’ll want to stay in and cuddle up, and so will your guests!

Add scented candles - Aside from the aesthetics of your home, the aroma you create can also spruce things up. With a mix of pine and cinnamon, you’ll feel like everyday is a holiday this month upon walking through the front door!

Put down a welcome mat - Welcome friends and family with a front door mat with a festive quote and design. Might we also mention, this is a great way to keep your carpets clean throughout the house.

Advantages of Oriental & Area Rug Cleaning

As beautiful as your oriental and area rugs are, they need a good cleaning just like your other home textiles! While vacuuming is a good tactic to clean up noticeable dirt and crumbs, every so often your carpets will need to be cared for by a professional. And that’s where Triple S comes in!

When you choose an oriental and area rug cleaning at one of our plant locations, here are just a few of the advantages you will receive:

Sit back and relax - Don’t break your back trying to scrub away those (almost) impossible stains. Professional cleaners have the tools and expertise to clean as easy as 1, 2, 3!

Double-sided cleaning - With a professional rug cleaning, your area rugs will be cleaned completely and thoroughly! Only with Triple S in-plant cleaning, will you receive double-sided cleaning to get rid of all stubborn stains, dirt, and contaminants.

Save time - When you have your rugs professionally cleaned, you won’t have to search for all your cleaning equipment or worry about all that extra time figuring which solutions to use.

Improve air quality - Vacuuming regularly will only get rid of surface dirt and dust. But what about those deeper carpet fibers? It’s easy for dust and allergens to get caught down there, so hiring a professional to clean your rugs can take care of that, deeply removing dirt from the bottom layers of your textiles.

When you choose Triple S for your expert oriental and area rug cleaning, yours will be individually inspected and tested to determine the proper cleaning method required. Our unique technology removes all that everyday soil, as well as those occasional spills, spots, dust, and unhealthy allergens that penetrate the deep layers of your carpet. Plus, we will pick up and deliver them back Clean, Fresh and Bright!

Keeping the Home Clean During Thanksgiving

When your friends and family gather together for Thanksgiving, you’re bound to have a lot of laughs. But you’re also likely to have a mess on your hands!

If you’re hosting a Thanksgiving feast this year, don’t panic when your home becomes messy. Instead, follow these quick and simple tips that will make cleaning up easier (before and after your guests arrive):

Think ahead. With all the cooking you’ll be doing, it’s a smart idea to clean up prior to your gathering. For example, wipe down countertops and sweep your tile floors so that you won’t have extra cleaning up to do once your guests are gone.

Organize the fridge. Chances are your fridge will be packed with Thanksgiving food this week. So if you have any expired food items or leftovers you know you won’t eat, toss them out and leave some extra (and much needed) room for your vegetables, eggs, cranberry sauce, and other holiday treats!

Clean little by little.
With all the guests you will be inviting over, you’re bound to have many dishes to clean up. When you wait until Thanksgiving is over before you start getting organized, you’re likely to get more stressed out. So stay on top of the mess by soaping up your dishes as you use them and make room for more when you need it!

Ask for disposables.
Are your holiday guests bringing side dishes? Ask them to bring attractive, disposable dishes. That way you won’t have to spend additional time scraping out and soaping up extra dishes.

For more tips on how to make Thanksgiving cleaning simple this year, click here.

Furniture Dilemma: Fabric or Leather?

Do you go fabric or leather? Choosing which sofa to buy is a confusing part of the home decor shopping experience. To answer the question shortly, both are great options. However, there are a few factors to consider before you start looking:

1. Comfort
One essential factor to consider is comfort. Which do you find to feel more cozy? Also, the climate you live in can affect that level of comfort. Nothing feels more uncomfortable than slipping into a leather couch or arm chair when the temperatures get chilly. On the other hand, if you live in a warm climate you might realize that a leather couch will feel more suitable.

2. Care

Fabric can wear and tear, but so can leather (believe it or not). So deciding which option to choose also depends on whether or not you have kids or entertain often. Spills do happen, so learn how each material should be cleaned and which you find more convenient for your lifestyle.

3. Color & Pattern
Leather can come in several color varieties, but fabric colors are practically unlimited. What’s your preference? If color and pattern is of the utmost importance to you, you might decide that fabric furniture is for you. However, if you’re indifferent about color but love earth tones, you may want to opt for leather.

4. Health Benefits
Do you suffer from allergies? Consider the benefits of a leather couch and the drawbacks of fabric when it comes to dirt, dust, and pet dander. Allergy sufferers often do well with leather sofas, as they tend to collect less dust.

No matter which option you choose, be sure to keep your furniture looking spotless! Need a deep cleaning for your new or old furniture? We can help you with that! At Triple S, we offer several cleaning services to keep you home looking and feeling its freshest! To learn more, give us a call at 203-847-8000 or visit our website.

Best Kept Secrets: Choosing Carpet Color for Your Home

Cozying up your home this winter with a new carpet? Of all the colors under the sun, which one do you choose? Although there aren’t any set rules for determining which carpet color is best, there are a few factors to consider:

Lighting - Observe the natural light in your home. Does your room get lots of sunlight or does it stay dark all day long? If you choose a light carpet color, you might be able to brighten up the space (and vise versa).

Size - Size matters when it comes to selecting the right carpet. You can create the illusion of a larger space simply by choosing a solid color. Go with white if you want it to also feel more airy and minimal. Medium and dark shades, on the other hand, can make the room feel more cozy.

Climate - Do you live in a hot climate or a chilly one? Selecting a cool color tone can make your space look cooler, but a warmer hue can have the opposite effect.

Furniture - Remember: your carpet is a long-term investment that must pair up with the furniture you have. That being said, it’s important that the color you choose compliments your upholstery. When in doubt, go with a neutral hue, especially because this gives you the flexibility to change up your furniture later on.

Value - The color carpet you choose should be one that you love, but it should also be timeless. Because when you put your house on the market someday, the last thing you want is to scare off buyers or devalue your home. For example, imagine walking into a model home with wall-to-wall purple carpets. Would you like what you see? Classic colors are usually a better option in this case.

When you find the perfect new carpet for your home, be sure to preserve its freshness. At Triple S, we offer you the skill, energy, and experience to deliver safe, thorough carpet cleaning. To learn more about our services, give us a call at 203-847-8000 or visit our website.

How to Remove Coffee Stains from Everything

If you’re an avid coffee drinker, chances are you’ve spilt (on your favorite shirt, couch, or floor) a number of times. Lucky for all of us who love a morning cup of joe, there are tips and tricks to help you clean coffee stains off of all these surfaces and more!

Next time this happens to you, don’t panic! Here’s how to fight those stains and get back to your daily routine:

Shirt - Use the basic rules of spot removal. Put a few drops in one area of the shirt, count to ten, then examine the results. Next, work from the outer edge and work your way towards the center of the stain. After some time and patience, your stain should be removed thoroughly.

Couch - The same rules apply for couch cleaning, except you’ll want to know which solutions you can use for which fabrics. For many fabrics, you can use a little liquid dish soap and cool water. However, you might want to apply a ProSeal fabric protector to protect your furnishes against accidental spills. Click here to learn more.

Carpets - Your carpet was probably a large investment, so it’s important to clean them with the utmost care. First, apply a small amount of dry cleaning solvent or alcohol, but be sure not to over-wet. Mix one teaspoonful of white neutral detergent with a cup of lukewarm water. Mix one tablespoon of household ammonia with a half cup of water and one-third cup of white household vinegar with two-thirds cup of water. Lastly, blend a solution of powered enzyme laundry detergent following label or box directions.

Tips For Prepping Outdoors for Winter

Thanksgiving is around the corner, which means winter is almost here. Is your outdoor space ready? Prepping your lawn and patio for cooler weather is an important part of preventing costly repairs down the road. The easiest way to prepare is to create a checklist with a few tips:

1. Last minute mowing.
Mow your lawn before the temperatures freeze up. About three-fourths of an inch long should do!

2. Rake the falling leaves.
Your lawn needs all the sun it can get - especially before the dry air sets in. So rake up those dry, crunchy leaves and put them in a trash bag.

3. Cater to your garden.
Tend to your garden before it’s too late! This means collecting seeds and storing them for the next season, fertilizing the grass, and saving summer bulbs for next year. IT also helps to add a protective layer of mulch to your soil to preserve the temperature during winter and prevent soil from “forcing” your plants out of the ground.

4. Clear off your deck.
Winters in the Northeast can bring lots of heavy winds and snowfalls, which can wreak havoc on your outdoor furniture. With that being said, be sure to store your tables, swings, chairs, and BBQ. And don’t forget about your patio cushions as well!

At Triple S, we know it’s important to preserve the look of your furniture. That is why we offer patio and boat cushion storage and cleaning for the winter season! As part of this service, we will pick up your cushions, clean, store, and return them looking better than ever! How to Pet-Proof Your Home

Dogs and cats are curious pets and can use your help to keep them from getting into trouble. By making a few adjustments in the home, you can help your loving companion stay safe. Below are five ways you can pet-proof your home:

Stow food. Hide food in cabinets and pantries or push them far back on your countertops to protect your pet from swallowing harmful ingredients. This goes for food wrappers as well.

Secure trash cans. To prevent your pet from going through the trash or knocking it over, cover and place them inside a latch cabinet.

Put children’s toys away. Your furry friend might mistake your child’s toy as their own. And if that toy has bells, buttons, or sharp edges, it’s easy for your pet to get hurt.

Hide dangling wires. Your pet might chew or tug on the wires from your lamps, TVs, computers, and telephones, so it’s important to hide them away.

Fold laundry. Drawstrings and buttons can be life threatening if swallowed, so keep your laundry off the floor and out of sight.

Cleaning Mistakes You're Making at Home

There’s no denying that cleaning is one of those tedious tasks many of us would like to avoid. But what if the time you were putting into cleaning was actually doing more harm than good? Save yourself minutes by learning these common cleaning mistakes you might be making at home:

Washing windows when it’s sunny. Glass cleaners tend to dry up quickly in sunlight, so if you happen to be washing windows on a sunny day, stop right there! You’ll be much better off doing so either late in the afternoon, early in the evening, or on a day when the skies are overcast.

Not cleaning your cleaning supplies. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is let your cleaning supplies go too long without cleaning them. This accounts for all sponges, brushes, mops, and vacuums. Regularly clean your mops in clean soapy water and change your filter and vacuum bags (depending on how often you use them).

Not using your vacuum attachment. When it comes to vacuuming pet fur, using the right kind of attachments can make all the difference. When cleaning pet fur without an attachment, you might be blowing debris all over the room. But if it’s only a few flyaways, you might be good to go just using a damp paper towel or a mop.

Depending too much on cleaning products. Using cleaning products are known to make cleaning up easier, but if you use them too often and on a regular bases, you might be damaging your surfaces. Many products contain harsh chemicals, so be sure to read labels first and use sparingly.

Tips for Cleaning Your Sofa

Between family gathering, pets, and kids, your sofa gets a lot of use, so it's important to keep it clean. Whether you’re looking to prolong the life of your upholstery or just freshen it up, there are a few steps you can take to make sure you’re using the proper methods.

Read instructions. Treat all of your upholstery with special care. The type of material your sofa is made of will determine which type of cleaning methods are safe to use (and which ones are not). So be sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions before using any product, or test a small, unnoticeable spot to see whether or not a solution is well suited for the fabric.

Regularly clean fabric. Sofas stain easily, especially when they’re not in use. Before taking out any chemicals, remove dust by vacuuming, preferably with the upholstery attachment that comes with your vacuum. If you don’t own a working vacuum, you could also use a soft-bristled cleaning brush to loosen the dust and sweep it off.

Wipe down leather and vinyl. If you own a leather or vinyl sofa, wipe it down with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and stains. This is because vacuums do not work at well on this type of fabric, but you could also sweep with a small, dry broom.

Seal all fabrics. Once you’ve removed dust and stains from your upholstery, be sure to seal it with a ProSeal formula of fluoropolymers and co-polymers. In doing so, you can improve fade resistance, color fastness, and abrasion resistance in addition to resisting common spills.

At Triple S, we offer professional upholstery cleaning and Proseal Fabric Protector to take care of all your upholstery needs. We have three main plant locations:

Insect Damage on Wool Rugs

Do you have a wool rug at home? Wool material is made to last, so chances are it’s in great condition. That is of course, if it is properly taken care. Placing a rug in the wrong conditions means it may get eaten away by moths and carpet beetles.

By taking good care of your wool rug, you can avoid insect damage. Here’s how:

Regularly check your rug. Look for signs of damage. Moths prefer dark undisturbed areas, so pay particular attention to the underside edges as well as both back and front areas that are under heavy furniture. Do you see any missing wool? If so, you might be looking at insect damage.

Vacuum periodically. The best course of action is to vacuum the back of your rug, especially areas under heavy furniture. It also helps to rotate a larger rug and keep areas along baseboards clean. Rugs with food and urine stains are more subject to damage and should be cleaned more often, so keep your eye out for such stains and vacuum accordingly.

Bring rugs to a cleaning plant. Although cleaning wool area rugs at home can help clean signs of damage, it will not clean the back or underside where insect damage starts. That being said, having your rug professionally in-plant cleaned on a regular basis is important.

The best way to know if you have inspect damage is to look for signs of damage. Moth larvae will leave behind silken tubes or mats, often the color of the wool. Beetles, on the other hand, leave behind shed skins and fecal pellets the size of a grain of salt, which should aid in identification.

If you think you have damage contact Triple S. We have the necessary training and experience to safely and effectively clean your rugs. We also recommend you call a licensed pest control provider. Triple S is a founding member of ARCS – Association of Rug Care Specialists.

How to Clean Your Vacuum

A vacuum is one of those home appliances that makes cleaning up a whole lot easier. But with all that work it does, it needs a bit cleaning up of its own to stay in tiptop shape. We know it helps to have a checklist at hand, so below are a few quick maintenance tips that’ll help your vacuum run more efficiently:

Remove the dirt container. It’s common for the dirt container to be exposed to dust whether or not your vacuum includes a bag. So remove the bag if you have one, remove the container, and rinse thoroughly.

Check the filter. It’s important to clean your filter, especially if you have a newer model. Be sure to read the manual that came with your vacuum and either clean or replace the filter periodically (but more often if you use it frequently).

Clean the brush roll. The spinning brush underneath your vacuum catches a lot of dirt, hair, and debris. And if you don’t clean it once in awhile, it won’t work as well as it once did. By removing the brush roll and using an old comb to clean it, you can help it to run better.

Don’t forget the attachments.
Take out any extra heads and extension tubes that come with your vacuum cleaner, as they can also get backed up with debris inside. With a mix of warm water and dish soap, wipe them down with a damp cloth and let dry before putting them back.

Winter weather can wreak havoc in your backyard, whether it be your deck, patio, or furniture. It’s important take precaution to make sure nothing gets ruined over the next several months. Below are a few steps to help you prepare:

Clear the deck. Clearing the deck of leaves and debris can help prevent mold and mildew from forming. Use a broom to sweep off the loose debris and then grab a blower to get all the hard-to-sweep leaves and dirt off your deck. It also helps to hose it down before it gets too cold out to do so.

How to Make Your Bedroom Feel More Cozy

If the fall weather makes you want to wrap yourself in blankets, you know it’s time to get your home ready for the cooler months ahead. Making a short list of decorating methods is all you need to make your bedroom feel more cozy and inviting. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

Add dark colors.
If summer is all about whites, then fall and winter is about changing it up. Dark colors like chocolate, orange, and red will set the mood for chilly weather and remind you that there’s no place sweeter than your own home! Even if it means just swapping out those yellow pillows for red ones instead, you’ll feel a lot more comfortable.

Switch up window treatments. Fold up those sheers and roll out those heavy drapes. The thicker the material, the warmer your bedroom will feel during those cold nights of strong winds and snowfall. And if you have thermal ones, that’s even better!

Grow seasonal plants. During the harvest season, you may want to stick to herbs and marigolds. But when December rolls around, it’s all about dark greenery and poinsettias to get you in feeling festive.

Throw on layers. You may be surprised how adding a faux fur throw can make a difference. When you throw layers over your feather down comforter and across your upholstered chair, it gives you a place to curl up and relax. Throwing down an extra rug or changing up your current one for some wool instead can make your bedroom feel more cozy too!

Don’t forget - a cozy home is also a clean one! If you’re about to cross “clean the house” off your do-to list this season, turn to the experts at Triple S! We have all the appropriate equipment to get your bedroom looking brand new again! We are a family owned business with over 50 years of experience. We have three main plant locations:

How to Keep Your Floors Spotless

Nobody likes a dirty floor, but cleaning is a project we often overlook. Truth is if you don’t clean on a regular basis, your floors can become hazardous to your health. So whether your have hardwood, tile, or carpet, here are a few simple tips to help you keep your floors looking spotless:

Vacuum weekly. With all the dirt and food that gets caught between your carpet fibers or in between your grout, it’s easy for you to pick up germs. That is why it’s a smart idea to vacuum on a weekly basis. Not to mention it can help you prevent more high maintenance cleaning later on. But for more high traffic areas, vacuuming every other day can be a safer option.

Stop tracks at the door. Shoes pick up small particles of grit and fertilizer that can leave traces around your home without you even realizing it. But taking your shoes off at the welcome mat can significantly keep your floors more clean, especially if you and your children spend lots of time outdoors.

Sweep daily. Crumbs, dirt, and spills can make your floors look significantly more dirty overtime. So mop up those coffee spills once they happen, sweep up those bread crumbs once they drop, and pick up that dirt once you see it. In doing so, you can prevent your carpets and tile grout from staining.

At Triple S, we know how important it is to keep your floors spotless. That is why we offer several professional cleaning services including carpet and grout tile cleaning. We are a family owned business with over 50 years of experience and have three main plant locations:

Your Fall Cleaning Checklist

As the leaves start to change colors, we’re reminded that it’s time to do a little cleaning up at home. To make your space feel cozy for the fall and winter months, there are a few tips that can help. Read on to get started:

Switch up the sheets. Silk sheets and lightweight quilts are ideal for summer. But when the temperatures get chilly it’s time to swap those out for flannel sheets and feather down duvets. The heavier the sheets, the better night’s sleep you will get. But if you love your quilt and don’t want to stow it away, you can always fold it up at the head of the bed just in case you need an extra layer!

Dust your blinds and baseboards.
Your blinds and baseboards collect a lot of dust and allergens throughout the warmer months. So if you haven’t done so already, go around the house and clean them with a vacuum before the first cold day. By skipping this step, you can cause your heating system to blow the dust around, which can cause lots of discomfort.

Sweep the chimney. If you have a fireplace in the home, it’s a good idea to get a professional inspection and cleaning before using it. This can ensure that there’s no debris or hazard to pose a threat to your home and your family.

Vacuum regularly. It’s common for the home to get dusty when you turn the heat on, which is why it’s important to vacuum. To keep your home feeling clean, try to vacuum as often as you can - a weekly cleaning can help immensely! Bonus tip: by using an upholstery attachment for your furniture, you can protect delicate material from getting sucked in the nozzle.

For optimal results, add professional cleaning to the list! At Triple S, we offer expert carpet, drapery, and upholstery cleaning to help you get your home ready for fall. We are a family owned business with over 50 years of experience. We have three main plant locations:

3 Secrets to Having a Chic Home

Making your home look chic doesn’t have to cost a fortune. All you need are a few simple changes, so consider these three easy tips to create an expensive look on a dime!

Choose the right colors. Stick to a neutral color scheme if you want to create a chic, expensive look. From gray to brown to white, there are plenty of shades you can choose from. Neutral colors look clean and are an excellent way to create a chic, sophisticated-looking home. Plus, you risk the chance of color-clashing. Bonus tip: add splashes of bold colors if you’re going for a more regal design.

Add a little texture. Without texture, a room can feel dull and uninviting. However, purchasing one or two statement pieces can bring more dimension into your home. For example, a sheepskin blanket paired with a leather couch or a wool rug layered on top of a wooden floor can make your living space look like a million bucks, when it really only costed you very little!

Declutter.
When your beautiful home is filled with piles of mail, clothes, and boxes, it can look a bit messy. What you want to do in this case is get rid of all the unnecessary items laying around and make the space look as open as possible. Why? Because negative space says a lot when it comes to creating a chic home. In a sense, it makes your home feel more airy, which makes for a more sophisticated look.

Let Your Bedroom Breathe

With layers and layers of fabric, it’s easy for a bedroom to get stuffy. But now that Fall has arrived, we can finally catch a breath of fresh air. And while opening the windows is one way to let your bedroom breathe, there are a few other things you can do to declutter:

Get rid of the TV. Television can be distracting in a not-so-good way. Not only does it ruin a peaceful sleep, but it can also keep you from exploring other hobbies like reading.

Move your laundry. If your bedroom is on the smaller side, it’s best you find another location in the house to store your laundry basket. While clothing can easily catch dust, it also adds on piles of unnecessary clutter, which can be distracting when all you want to do is relax.

Remove extra furniture. Do you have a vanity or side table that you don’t use? While furniture can be nice to look at, sometimes less is more. If you feel you can get rid of what’s lying around in these drawers, you might easily be able to create more space in your bedroom (and more room to breathe).

Eliminate pillows. If heaps of pillows are making it harder to crawl in and out of bed, you might want to consider taking a few pillows away. Instead, try streamlining your bed’s look so that it’s functional, but still looks appealing.

While you’re emptying out your space, don’t forget to keep it Clean Fresh & Bright! At Triple S, we are dedicated to helping you keep your home spotless and dust-free with our carpet, upholstery, and drapery cleaning! Triple S is a family owned business with over 50 years of experience.

How to Cut Down on Cleaning Time

Love having a clean home, but don’t want to spend hours cleaning? We’ve got you covered! Below area few expert tips to help you tidy up your house in no time:

Clean from top to bottom.
If you want to cut back on cleaning time, start at the top and work your way down. That way, you won’t have to clean your floors twice from crumb droppings or water spatters.

Don’t wait too long. Cleaning up as you go can make a tedious chore a little bit easier. For example, don’t let dirty dishes and utensils fill up the sink - if you do, you’ll be putting a lot more time into cleaning than necessary. Little by little is the way to go!

Fold the laundry. Do your clean clothes keep piling up? If so, make it a new habit to fold and put away your laundry each week. Doing so can make cleaning quick and easy when there are other tasks to do.

Store clutter at the door. Keep your house tidy by using a closet and shoe rack at the front entry. Hang up hats, jackets, gloves, toys, and even store your mail. You’ll be happy you stashed your belongings away before entering the living room.

How to Make Your Old Deck New Again in 4 Steps

Now that September is in full swing, take a little time during this beautiful weekend to clean up your deck. Below, we’ve put together four steps to help you make sure your outdoor space looks fresh before fall arrives:

Step 1. Sweep up debris. It’s much easier to clear your deck before hosing it down, as water causes everything to stick. So the first thing you want to do is grab a broom and sweep up any dirt or leaves that cover the surface.

Step 2. Water your plants. Once you’ve swept away the debris, grab your garden hose and water the plants and vegetables that surround your deck. When you take care of your plants, you can bring your outdoor space to life again, especially if things are starting to look brown.

Step 3. Tackle stains. Getting rid of stains can be tricky, especially because different decks are built out of different materials. But whether your deck is made of wood or concrete, there are several solutions to help you out. For example, wood brighteners are great for cleaning wood, while all-surface cleaners are ideal for concrete.

Step 4. Wet the surface. After you’ve cleared away debris, watered your landscape, and taken care of stains, you’ll want to give your deck a good washing. Grab a wet mop and some dish soap. Squirt a few drops of soap and scrub the surface well. Lastly, water it down to wash away the soap.

Part of getting your deck ready for fall means making your old and worn deck look brand new! Another part is making sure you store away your summer furniture. If you have outdoor patio cushions that you want to stow away, call Triple S! We will thoroughly clean your cushions and repair or even replace foam if desired. Then, we will store them in a clean, dry warehouse and have them ready for pickup or delivery the week you want them in spring.

Things You Should Never Vacuum

Vacuums might seem powerful enough to pick up just about anything. However, there are a few items that could in fact ruin your household appliance. To avoid damage, here are a few items you should never vacuum:

Glass. When a wine glass or a dish breaks, your first instinct is probably to grab the vacuum and suck up the mess. But if you do, you can possibly puncture the bag inside your vacuum and scratch the interiors. The best alternative in this case is to grab a broom instead.

Soggy food. Not only is it dangerous for electrical devices to get close to moisture, but your vacuum is also not built to efficiently pick up anything wet. So whether it be pet food or spilled cereal, you're better off grabbing a paper towel to clean it up.

Coins. Avoid vacuuming copper, nickel, or anything in between. When you roll over pennies or even paper clips, you risk them getting caught in the rotating brush or breaking off other pieces inside your vacuum. Picking them up with your hands or a broom is a better idea.

Dust particles. If you’ve recently finished construction in your house, skip vacuuming the tiny dust particles remaining. Instead, you’ll need a bit of a stronger appliance, so call your local carpet and flooring cleaning service if you don’t have the proper machinery at home to get the job done.

If you’re looking for a professional cleaning to pick up some of the things that the average vacuum can’t, then call the experts at Triple S! Easy Ways to Upgrade Your Bedroom

Fall is almost here - the perfect time to cozy up your bedroom! Looking for a few easy ways to turn your space into a relaxing retreat? Get inspired by these four ideas:

Go big with a headboard. Want to easily transform your ordinary bedroom into a luxurious, boutique hotel room? All you need is a tall headboard with lots of detail to make your bed the eye-catching focal point of your space! Make sure the fabric is high-quality and has a unique silhouette to it!

Hang chandeliers. Nightstand lamps are a great option for lighting up a room, but hanging tiny, crystal chandeliers on each side of your bed can make your space look even more glamorous and bright. Not to mention, chandeliers can also transform your bedroom from ordinary to extraordinary without breaking the bank!

Add extra throws. There’s almost no better feeling than diving onto a bed covered with extra pillows and throw blankets - so layer them on! Don’t be afraid to mix and match. For example, a paisley patterned duvet looks great with a solid throw and geometrical shaped pillows.

Window Treatments. Bare windows are the best way to attract light. However, adding sheer, flowy window treatments can soften up the look of your bedroom, while still inviting lots of sunlight in! If you’d rather add a little more privacy, opt for linen window treatments that can easily swing open when the autumn air is breezy outside.

Fall Color Trends to Add to Your Home

Fall is the perfect time to cozy-up your home! From chocolate brown to burnt orange, we are falling in love with these rich autumn hues. Here are four colors to look out for and how to incorporate them into your home:

Bronze. Transform your dining area into an elegant retreat by adding bronze hues from top to bottom! Start with a regal, bronze-patterned wallpaper and long draperies. And don’t forget to tie in a touch of warmth by adding a red and orange floral arrangement in the center of your dining table!

Red. Not only does the color red tie your cozy dining room together, but it also makes for an inviting bedroom. Because red hues are especially vibrant, opt for a neutral wall color and place red accents everywhere else. For example, adding a red headboard, a beige and red nightstand, and complimentary window treatments can have your room ready for fall in no time!

Brown. Chocolate brown is another color that makes us feel like cuddling up when the leaves start to fall. So, take this hue to your living area by incorporating light-wood bookshelves, a brown leather couch, and an oriental rug with a blend of light and dark shades. This color works especially well if your home is more on the traditional side.

Pumpkin. We can’t think of a better color to represent the fall season! Adding shades of pumpkin to any space is easy - all you need are splashes of muted orange mixed in with deep brown and gray tones. Pumpkin colored pillows and lanterns are both great ways to create a bedroom oasis!

What do you think of these fall color trends for your home? Tell us on our Facebook page!

Simple Tips for Planning Your Next Outdoor Party

Labor Day is approaching soon, which means many of us will be hosting outdoor gatherings! A lot can go into planning backyard parties, especially end of the summer bashes. Here are a few tips that can help you prepare painlessly for your outdoor party.

Detailed Invites
Send out some invitations with basic information to avoid any confusion. Include important details such as the date and time, location, etc. But don’t stop there! Let them know what time they’ll be eating so they can anticipate when to eat beforehand. Including the type of attire everyone should wear will also help ease any questions people may have. No one wants to be the under-dressed or over-dressed person at a party. Lastly, set a rain date if bad weather could ruin the party. If not, add a “rain or shine” comment at the bottom of the invitation.

Let There Be LightThe party is taking place outside and it will get dark sooner than it did towards the beginning of summer. Set up strings of lights across the party on trees, across decks, and on fences. Add a few lanterns around the party for extra lighting. The key is to have just enough dim light to be able to interact and maneuver around the dancefloor.

Turn the Music Up
Music should be heard throughout the entire party, but please don’t turn the speakers to max volume. For an optimal music experience, place multiple speakers at each corner of the yard, setting them at a lower volume. More importantly, don’t be that host who has the same 10 songs playing throughout the night. Create a playlist that’s at least five hours long. That way the playlist will last almost as long as the length of the party. It’s okay to repeat a song, but not consistently throughout the night.

Fun for the Kids
Parties are meant for fun, not for constantly peering over your shoulder to worry about what the kids are doing. Set up an area for the kids to play in, like a Slip ‘n Slide, sprinkler, or a volleyball net. Let the kids have their fun while you have yours.

Take these tips and incorporate them into your big end of summer bash. While parties can be fun, the clean up never is. You may notice after a party that there may be some drink or food stains leading to the bathroom or on your new patio furniture. Don’t panic just yet! Let Triple S Carpet, Rug, Drapery & Upholstery Cleaners help you out. We’ll help you clean up the mess on your carpets and patio cushions while you focus on disposing of the punch bowl. How to Clean Up All Your Pet Messes

As much as we love our pets, we can’t help but cringe when we find clumps of fur or smell odor on the couch or carpet. But don’t panic - we’re here to help! Below is a list of easy ways you can clean up those annoying pet messes in your home:

Pick up fur. Use a damp rubber glove to grab that fur that your pet leaves behind after his nap. If you use a glove that’s damp, you can easily pick up loose hairs in just seconds. However, if the shedding is excessive, your best bet is the suck it up with a vacuum.

Clean up paw prints. Paw prints can get muddy, but try to resist the urge to wipe them up when you see them. Why? Becuase Cleaning them when they’re still wet won’t help. Instead, let these muddy spots dry and then vacuum them up - you’ll be left with clean, fresh carpets!

Get rid of urine stains.
Accidents happen. If you spot one, simply mix 1 cup of water and ⅛ tsp of dish soap. Then, blot the stain with a clean cloth by blotting (avoid wiping it). Lastly, wash away the soap by dabbing it with 1 tbsp of white vinegar and 1 cup of water.

Fight stinky furniture. While vacuuming up fur can keep your upholstery clean, smells are a different story. To get rid of odors on your furniture, give Triple S a call for a professional cleaning! We will not only get rid of pet fur and dander, but we will also make sure the stink is gone for good.
