A Pet Friendly Home

Pets offer the most unconditional love we could ask for, but they also make a giant mess (most of the time). And they can’t help it either! From shedding fur to having accidents indoors, our pets can wreak havoc on our furniture and our floors. Don’t panic - instead of getting frustrated with your furry friend, take the opportunity to learn how you can keep your home fur and urine free:

 Vacuum Weekly
Pet hair is noticeable and has a dirty odor. By vacuuming on a weekly basis, you can eliminate the majority of fur and hair and sticks to your furry floors.

Sweep Floors DailyGot a Swiffer at home? If not, now is the time to get one! Hardwood might seem like the best option for pet owners, but if you don’t care for them, pet hair will naturally fly everywhere. So do a quick sweeping job once a day to eliminate hair (and even dirt stains from outside).

Groom Your Pet
Keep your cat or dog clean by doing more than trimming their nails. Give them a friendly bath to eliminate dirt and shedding fur. Your furniture and rugs will last longer if they don’t need to be washed as often and your pets aren’t exposing them to dirt, hair, and odor on the daily. Don’t forget to use a tear-free shampoo!

Establish a Clean Up Area
Picture this: your pet goes outside to “do business”, kicks some dirt up, rolls around, and comes running back into the house. Now imagine how much dirt your furry friend is trailing behind. Before you let them into main areas of the house, clean off their paws and using a wipe at the door (and lay out a mat). You’ll eliminate most of the dirt without it coming inside your home.

What You Need to Know Before Buying a New Couch

Your furniture is a huge investment, so why not put careful thought into choosing the right one?

Imagine purchasing a couch that doesn’t fit your space or is the completely wrong color - you’ll wind up wasting your money and being unhappy with the way your space looks! That’s why it’s important to follow a few steps before finding your ideal choice:

Choosing a color
For many people, first appearances matter most. The color is what catches the eye, so deciding on an appropriate color is important. Does it compliment the other tones in your living space? While you don’t want to go too over the top, you also don’t want your couch to blend in either. In fact, the couch can serve as a focal point of a room.

Finding the right material
Finding a material depends on a few factors - do you have pets and young kids? Do you entertain often? First you will need to decide between leather and fabric. Next, you will need to narrow down your options. For example, you can choose suede, nylon, wool, or microfiber.

Measuring size
Choosing the proper size couch relies on the amount of space you have and are willing to dedicate to seating. Once you know the size of your space, look at the other furniture in your room (keep the couch to scale with other furniture). Next, remember the general rules of spacing. For example, leave about 3 to 10 feet of space between seating sections and 7 feet between your couch and the TV.

Considering the filling
There are different types of couch filling. Most have polyurethane, which usually means seating will be more firm. If you’re looking for extreme comfort and plush, opt for down cushions with a high quality for guaranteed longevity.

Thinking about guests

Finding a couch without a pullout (or at least one that’s long enough) can be a problem if you invite guests to stay overnight. Buying a new couch without this option means you’ll have to turn away your guests from being able to stay with you overnight. That being said, make sure your new upholstery is sleep-worthy to some degree!

Once you find the right couch, don’t forget to keep it spotless! For fabric protectors and upholstery cleaning, call Triple S! We have three main plant locations:

Earth Day: Improving Air Quality in Your Home

Today is Earth Day! Let’s take this time to be more mindful of the environment we live in. If you feel like the air in your home is stuffy, open up the windows and breathe in the fresh air. You can also improve the air quality in your home by following these simple tips:

Clean Daily
Floors and furniture have the word “dust” written all over them. That is, unless you keep up with cleaning. It doesn’t have to be much - just wipe down your surfaces when you have a moment, whether you’re waiting for dinner to heat up or you have a minute before rushing out the door. Always work your way from top to bottom, starting with ceiling fans and cabinets, then to countertops, and lastly to your floors. Use a damp, clean cloth and try to avoid harsh chemicals. You’ll be surprised how much cleaner your home will feel just by wiping up surfaces in a flash!

Clear Air Ducts
Dirty air ducts aren’t necessarily a health threat, but they can make your home feel incredibly uncomfortable. Cleaning them with a the proper nozzle on your vacuum will prevent all that dirty air from getting blown around, especially when summer arrives and you start rely on your AC daily.

Get Carpets Cleaned

Whether you have wall-to-wall carpeting or rugs, getting them professionally cleaned can significantly improve the air quality in your home. Green Cleaning the Bathroom

Cleaning up your bathroom for spring? Put the bleach aside!

Nowadays people are finding new and eco-friendly ways to clean up their home, and for a good reason! Harsh chemicals cause environmental damage and are hazardous to your health. So why not try these green cleaning tips instead?

Little by little
If given extra time in the morning (or at night), make it a daily habit to clean up after every shower. Overtime, that icky black mildew can grow and grow. So wipe up the surface with a non-bleach cleaner. And if you can, reuse your towel twice before tossing in the laundry.

Natural scents
Don’t let your bathroom stink up! To keep it smelling fresh, squeeze several drops of essential oil, such as eucalyptus or peppermint into a small vessel and let it sit on your countertop. In the guest bath, leave a few options for your visitors to enjoy!

Showerhead cleanse
Showerheads can become clogged with mineral deposits, so skip the harsh chemicals and fill a plastic bag with undiluted white vinegar. Then, tie the plastic bag over the showerhead and let it work its magic overnight. Lastly, scrub the surface clean with a toothbrush - should be good as new!

Airing it out
While the best way to prevent mildew is to turn on the exhaust fan, another eco-friendly and energy efficient option is to crack open the window when showering. This will allow the steam to escape before you fog the windows up!

Removing Pet Urine Stains from Your Carpet

You can’t get enough of your loving cats and dogs, but as for accidents - well, we can certainly do without those! Not only does your pet’s urine stink up a room - it also stains your carpet. That is, unless you clean it quickly enough! Here are a few tips to help you catch those urine stains before they soak up:

Step 1: Mix 1 teaspoonful of white neutral detergent (a mild liquid dishwashing detergent containing no strong alkalies or bleaches) with 1 cup of lukewarm water.

Step 2: Blend 1 tablespoon of household ammonia with ½ cup of water. Blot until no more urine is removed.

Step 3: Neutralize by mixing ⅓ cup of white household vinegar with ⅔ cup of water.

Step 4: Blot up any remaining moisture by pressing or padding the area with the absorbent white towel and weigh it down. Allow to dry for 6 hours.

While cleaning up pet messes, remember the following key tips:

  • Test your spotting solution in an inconspicuous area
  • Urine stains may cause permanent dye removal from fibers
  • Avoid mixing ammonia and bleach during your clean-up operation
  • Always blot from the outer corner of the stain, inwards
  • For further help, you can find a IICRC certified carpet cleaner in your area b visiting www.iicrc.org.

Buying a Patio Rug

It’s that time of year again! You’ve bought all new essentials for your outdoor living space - a deck swing, table and chair set, potted plants, a wicker chair. There’s just one thing missing: your brand new patio rug!

Patio rugs can tie a space together if you choose the right one. So how do you know which will best suit your outdoor space? Here are a few elements to consider before making your purchase:

Material
Natural and synthetic woven materials both offer durability for varying weather conditions. Natural fibers, like hemp, jute, and seagrass are all great options and can add texture to your space. You will also benefit from speaking with a textile expert who can offer you alternative protection options against inspects, stains, and odor.

Size & Shape
First measure the outdoor area that you would like to cover. Then, if you have all of your furniture in place, determine how you want the rug to fit within the confines of the space. You may want to create a sitting area or a dining area. If you’re placing the rug under your furniture, we suggest you either have all the furniture legs on the rug or just the front legs. In other words, make sure your choice isn't too large or too small.

Patterns
If you prefer muted tones, then you can skip this step. But don’t be afraid to be bold in your outdoor space. Patio rugs can now be found in right colored shades, stripes, and even geometric patterns.

For more tips on choosing a patio rug for your outdoor space, contact the textile experts at Triple S! We can help you narrow down your options based on environment and preference. We are a family owned and operated business offering cleaning and repair services to keep your area rugs stain and odor free!

Spring Cleaning Shortcuts

Let’s face it: cleaning is one of the least fun chores we can imagine. Not to mention, it can also be incredibly time consuming. But when the winter is over, your home needs a little freshening up. To get rid of dirt, scuff marks, and stains, try these cleaning shortcuts to make your task an easier one:

Create easy access - Keeping your cleaning supplies within reach will give you more incentive to clean, rather than having to them down. So get creative by making a special space for them, such as hanging a rod underneath the kitchen sink or assembling a separate cabinet for them.

Work from top to bottom - This one is such a time saver, we can’t stress it enough! A mistake people often make is cleaning the floors, and then tidying up the final touches, such as their cabinets and faucets. Try cleaning backwards! Countertops, cabinets, and appliances should be the first thing. Next should be the floors, because let’s face it, after cleaning the top half, your floors will be a lot more messy.

Make the most of time - Cut down on cleaning time by working efficiently and not wasting a minute. For example, after spraying a cleaner on your bathroom fixtures, take out the trash. When you come back inside, your fixtures should be ready for a good scrubbing (and most of the stains should be dissolved).

Hire a pro - If you despise cleaning, don’t have the time, or lack proper equipment, you’re best off hiring a professional to take care of the cleaning for you. You have at least two crucial times when cleaning your house is necessary: the holidays and spring.

With spring upon us, call the textile experts at Triple S to make the process of cleaning a breeze! We serve Fairfield County, Greenwich, Cos Cob and the surrounding regions of Connecticut!  Triple S is a family owned business with over 50 years of experience.
